Generally speaking, there are two types of meat and bone meal and two types of animal fat that are suitable for incineration. These products are made from categories 1 and 2 material, respectively. Production takes place at Daka Bio-industries’ plants in Randers and Ortved.
Experience shows that it is relatively unproblematic to incinerate meal and fat, and that in many cases, these products can replace coal and oil.
All processed category 1 material must be incinerated, and the ashes must be deposited. However, if the products are incinerated in a cement furnace, the ashes may be incorporated into the finished product since this type of furnace ensures complete burning of the products.
Processed category 2 material is not subject to the same requirement to deposit the ashes resulting from the incineration of the material. As a consequence, the market potential for processed category 2 material is larger than for category 1 material.
Processed animal by-products are classified as waste, which means that the individual incineration plants must be approved by the environmental authorities. Moreover, the veterinary authorities must evaluate the veterinary aspects of the incineration solutions and also approve self supervision programmes relating to product transport, ensuring that the products are used for the specific purpose for which they have been officially approved.
